The Society for Children's Spirituality: Christian Perspectives is an educational organization exploring factors that contribute to the spiritual development of children. We accomplish this by examining biblical-theological perspectives, empirical research, pedagogical approaches, and children's issues related to social justice.
At each triennial conference scholars present their research, and best ministry practices are featured. Conferences in 2003, 2006, and 2009 were held at Concordia University and were sponsorred by Christian organizations. Two volumes have resulted (Donald Ratcliff, Holly Catterton Allen) and a third is in progress (Kevin Lawson). [Additional details are available by using the links at the left.]
Additionally, through our website www.childspirituality.org [and the support site at www.childspirituality.ning.com], we provide a forum to dialogue with others that represent a diversity of perspectives. We encourage continued exploration and scholarship in the area of children's spiritual formation by mentoring graduate students who are engaged in research.
--adapted from the legal description
In Spring, 2010 it was announced that the IRS granted the conference and society tax-exempt status. Thus all donations are fully deductable when filing for taxes in the United States. Although not retroactive, and not applicable to conference charges, funds provided to support the conference and society can now be deducted from taxes (for details, see a tax professional).
This process began shortly after the 2006 conference when the planning team decided it was time to incorporate, so that there would be a stronger legal standing. Initially incorporation was sought and later granted in the State of Illinois, originally as a not-for-profit organization. In late 2009 and early 2010 the director, La Verne Tolbert, filed papers to make this a nonprofit organization, and that status was granted shortly thereafter.
